This stroll takes us through the streets of working-class Athenian neighbourhoods, providing a fascinating insight into the migrations that have taken place in the Greek capital. This pictures bear witness to a certain urban melancholy, that of a dilapidated modern heritage, of beautiful houses in ruins, in which the music of this singular history can be heard: the rebetiko.

    Rebetika Proastia
(the suburbs of rebetiko) is a photography project that began in 2022. It documents the current practice of rebetiko in the taverns of Athens' working-class neighbourhoods.

The black and white images of this photo essay present a personal vision of the practice of rebetiko and in particular its visual materialisation through the practice of the dances linked to it: hassapiko, tsifteteli and zeibekiko. I wanted to draw a social and political parallel between the emergence of rebetiko (in the 20s and 30s) and the present day. This link is materialised by the night-time vision of the buildings of Athens, lying fallow or even in ruins.

This  photos are building a bridge between the period when the rebetiko was created, which was in the time of a human and social catastrophe,  and the present, in which the country is still in upheaval, and undergoing a social and political cataclysm.
